Bio

Giuliana Rosso (b. 1992) lives and works in Turin, Italy.

Her practice develops through painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, with painting understood as a space in which image, architecture, and perception enter into a hybridizing relationship. Her research investigates what emerges when perception and verbal language are destabilized, making visible emotional states, impulses, and forms of non-rational knowledge. Her work takes shape around subjects and environments in which the psychological dimension manifests itself as a material experience, continuously questioning the boundary between reality and imagination.

Within her research, the figure of the adolescent often recurs, not as an object of interest in itself, but as an emblem through which to investigate a psychological and emotional condition of human experience, revealing the social transformations that are shaping the present.

Rosso constructs images and environments in which the boundary between inner experience and material reality remains constantly permeable: fear, desire, shame, aggression, and loneliness take shape through presences, metamorphoses, and apparitions, bringing to the surface what normally remains repressed, inexpressible, or invisible. Her characters inhabit a space in which the logic of everyday life is interrupted and the imaginary manifests itself as a concrete experience. Her works thus question the distinctions between memory and hallucination, intimacy and space, reality and perception, opening up a reflection on the unstable forms through which experience takes shape.

Alongside oil painting, Rosso uses graphite, charcoal, chalk, papier-mâché, and ephemeral or perishable supports, extending the language of painting beyond the surface of the canvas through wall interventions, installations, and sculptures.

Drawing on texts from psychology and literature, as well as on painting from the past, her research intertwines anatomies and references to art history with the Neon Ooze aesthetic of youth culture and toys from the 1990s and early 2000s: artificial color palettes and digital imagery coexist with iconographic references derived from the art of the past, generating images suspended between familiarity and the uncanny, which resist both narrative and allegory.

Her drawings, often made on kraft paper, a material traditionally used in the preparation of frescoes, occupy corners, margins, and peripheral areas of architectural spaces, transforming normally overlooked areas into psychological surfaces on which memory, imagination, and fear can temporarily acquire form.

Her sculptures, modeled in papier-mâché and found materials, translate the layered logic of painting into three-dimensional space. An interest in reuse and circularity informs the creation of works conceived as forms of augmented reality through humble and reclaimed materials. In these works, the fragility of matter becomes an integral part of the creative process: the artwork manifests itself as an unstable organism, continuously suspended between permanence and dissolution.

Giuliana Rosso (b. 1992) vive e lavora a Torino, Italia.
